The bouclé armchair,
beyond the trend.

A bouclé armchair is judged first by its fibre: a wool-rich bouclé ages better than a 100% polyester one, which pills faster. Then comes the seat (high-resilience foam, 50 to 55 cm deep) and the setting: a private lounge does not ask for the same performance as a hotel lobby.

How to choose

  1. 01

    Bouclé composition

Wool or wool-rich for resilience and hand; mostly synthetic if cleaning comes first. The sheet gives percentages.

  2. 02

    Abrasion resistance

Martindale test (EN ISO 12947): the higher the cycles, the more rubbing the fabric withstands. For contract, aim for the top of the range.

  3. 03

    Pilling

Pilling grade (1 to 5, 5 = no pilling) when given: 4 or more for daily use.

  4. 04

    Seat depth and height

Lounge: 50 to 55 cm deep, 38 to 42 cm high. Dining or waiting chair: 42 to 45 cm high, firmer.

  5. 05

    Filling

High-resilience foam for a seat that keeps its shape; a feather or wadding top layer softens it but needs plumping.

  6. 06

    Removable cover or not

Shell chairs are rarely loose-covered: plan on-site professional cleaning instead.

01 — What bouclé really is

The word describes a fancy yarn in which some strands form small loops, regular or irregular. Woven, it gives a matt, raised surface that catches grazing light. The family ranges from tight, almost grainy bouclé to large fleece-like loops.

Composition changes everything. Wool, or wool blends, are naturally elastic: the loop springs back after sitting. Mostly synthetic bouclés clean easily but often pill sooner on the arms, where hands rub. Ask for the fabric’s technical sheet before choosing from a photograph.

02 — Shapes that suit the fabric

Bouclé flatters round, continuous volumes: enveloping shells, half-moon backs, solid arms. On very straight lines with fine piping, its texture blurs the design. That is why successful bouclé armchairs usually show few seams.

A deep, low chair invites you to stay: it is a reading or conversation chair. For a dining table or a waiting area where people stand up often, choose a slightly higher (42 to 45 cm), firmer seat.

03 — Residential or contract

At home, bouclé mostly needs care around pet claws and jewellery that snag the loops. In hotels and reception areas, traffic is heavier: the fabric must show high abrasion resistance and, in buildings open to the public, a fire test report matching the country’s rules.

For hotel projects we ask the maker for both documents before ordering, and check that they cover the exact fabric chosen, not another reference in the range.

Abrasion benchmarks often quoted by textile institutes: around 10,000 to 15,000 Martindale cycles for private use, 25,000 to 35,000 for office seating. Each maker sets its own grades: read the fabric sheet.

Care

  1. Vacuum weekly with a soft brush, following the loops.
  2. Blot stains with clean water, never rub: rubbing opens the loops.
  3. Snip a pulled thread with scissors, never pull it.
  4. Avoid long direct sunlight, which yellows cream bouclé.

Frequently asked questions

Is bouclé durable?

Yes, if composition and use match. A wool-rich bouclé handles daily home use well and recovers its shape. For a public space, check the Martindale abrasion figure and the pilling grade given by the maker: these two numbers, not the look, tell you whether it will last.

How do you clean a bouclé armchair?

Vacuum regularly with a soft brush. On a stain, blot with a damp cloth without rubbing, then let it air-dry. For grease or a full clean, call an upholstery cleaner, especially if the chair has no removable cover. Always test a product on a hidden area first.

Bouclé or velvet for a lounge chair?

Bouclé is matt and textured and forgives signs of use. Velvet is glossier and more formal and can mark under pressure depending on its fibre. For a busy family room, wool bouclé is usually more forgiving; for a formal lounge, velvet brings more depth.

Is a bouclé armchair suitable for a hotel?

Yes, provided the bouclé is contract grade: high abrasion resistance, a fire test report valid in the hotel’s country, and a cleaning plan. In a busy lobby it is usually kept for lounge armchairs rather than pass-through seating.
